WhatsApp was testing the UPI-based system on the beat version in India in two years and now after testing it, the company has launched it in India.
The company has announced that WhatsApp Pay is available to all users on Android and iOS in India. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on Thursday approved WhatsApp Pay as an extension for expansion into India.
NPCI allowed a cap of 2 crore users for WhatsApp Pay in the first segment. WhatsApp has a user base of 40 crores in India.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated, “We are working on this with the National Payments Corporation of India, which oversees everything to ensure that it is safe and reliable.
“And we built it using India’s Unified Payments Interface to provide great services to companies, making it easy for anyone to accept payments instantly on different apps.”
He said, “With UPI, India has created something truly special and is opening up a world of opportunities for micro and small businesses which are the backbone of the Indian economy.
India is the first country to do anything like this. I am happy that we are able to work together to support this effort and help achieve a more digital India. I want to thank all my colleagues who have made this possible. ”
WhatsApp is available in ten regional Indian languages and can be used by iOS and Android users in the latest version of the app.
WhatsApp users will still have to have a debit card with a bank-backed UPI. WhatsApp started testing its payment system in February 2018. Shortly after June of the same year, WhatsApp said that 10 million users were testing its payment system.
