Amazon, the American distribution giant, will broadcast eight Ligue 1 and eight Ligue 2 games over the period 2021-2024. Canal + will have two Ligue 1 matches per day.
End of the show. The verdict fell this Friday afternoon for the TV rights of Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 over the period 2021-2024. The offer with Amazon and Canal + was chosen. There was only one absence from the Professional Football League board of directors, with the rest of the votes in favor of the proposal.
Amazon will broadcast eight Ligue 1 games per day for 250 million euros (plus production costs at 25 million euros per year). Canal + will have two matches per day (28 choice n ° 1, 10 choice n ° 3 and 38 choice n ° 4) for 332 million euros per year. There are therefore 10 choice n ° 1 that Canal + will not have.
Amazon hits hard
Free retains the quasi-direct / VOD rights for 42 million euros per year. beIN Sports will offer two Ligue 2 matches for 30 million euros per year. Amazon also pockets eight matches of the French second division for 9 million euros per year. The total annual amount is 663 million euros guaranteed for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2. Amazon, the distribution giant, therefore continues to focus on French sport. The platform is already broadcasting some of the matches (night sessions) of the Roland-Garros tennis tournament this year.
Concretely, professional clubs will receive half of what they should have received in relation to the historic contract (2020-2024) negotiated during the call for tenders in 2018, amounting to 1.217 billion euros for the L1 and L2, which had turned into a fiasco because of Mediapro, a failed broadcaster. This sum of 663 million euros is also lower than what Canal + had paid to win most of the TV rights to French football (L1 and L2) for the period 2016-2020: 748.5 million euros.
This year, the other offer for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 concerned Canal + and beIN, without Amazon. In this offer, Canal + offered 370 million euros for two matches per day in Ligue 1 (38 choice n ° 1, 38 choice n ° 3) and beIN Sports added 165 million euros (+ 78 million euros in bonus ) for eight Ligue 1 matches per day, plus € 18 million for the ten Ligue 2 matches per day.
