In an exclusive interview granted to The Indian Paper and RMC, from Clairefontaine on the eve of the Euro (June 11-July 11), Emmanuel Macron spoke on Thursday on the thorny issue of TV rights for Ligue 1. The head of the state believes that professional French football must change its model, to no longer depend so much on broadcasters and the transfer window.
“I want the football world to recover from this affair,” Emmanuel Macron said of the case of the TV rights crisis in professional French football. In an exclusive interview for The Indian Paper and RMC, Thursday in Clairefontaine, on the eve of the start of the Euro for which the French team is competing on June 15, the Head of State felt that it was time for the Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 clubs to find another economic model, so as not to depend so much on broadcasters and transfer market revenues.
“We have a real subject: what is the business model of football for the next few years? I think that a model which is only based on TV rights and the very expensive sale of players, that no longer holds. ‘is good for no one. We have too many clubs that sell as soon as they have a good player, to get the most out of them. Which is sometimes not very good for the player, disappointing for the supporters and not good for them . We must manage to find a much more robust, much more diversified model “, supported the President of the Republic, who also expressed the wish to see the” policy of training “of the players to be” strengthened and consolidated ” .
“The contract signed with Mediapro was a mistake”
To achieve these goals, and settle the TV rights issue, Emmanuel Macron is counting on the French Football Federation (FFF) and the Professional Football League (LFP). “I have never intervened directly. I think it is not my role. (…) My role is to always be behind the French federation and all the clubs, on the one hand, and then to ‘to be behind the League. (…) I wish there could be an exit from the top, with viable figures for everyone and a model that moves forward “.
The interview was also an opportunity for the President to recall, according to him, that “the contract signed with Mediapro was an error” and that the “amounts were uncorrelated from a reality”. And to add: “The mutual knowledge, one with regard to football, and French football with regard to the investor, was insufficient. So I think it was an adventure, in a bad way of the term “.
