INFO RMC SPORT. The Champions Cup formula should change little next season with, once again, two pools from twelve clubs before the final stages. The competition is expected to span nine dates. In the Challenge Cup, the integration of South African teams should see the light of day.
Nothing is official yet, but we can see much more clearly for the next edition of the European Cup. The Champions Cup will kick off on the weekend of December 11 to end on May 28, 2022 in Marseille. But with what route to succeed Stade Toulousain? Twenty-four clubs will participate.
As initially planned last season before the pandemic changes the plans of the EPCR, which organizes the European Cups, the competition will begin with four days of group matches. Two groups of twelve teams, including eight representatives of the Top 14 (the first seven and Montpellier), will be held this winter (until the weekend of January 22).
The round of 16 could be played in two-way matches
Then? According to information from RMC Sport, the strong trend is five dates for the finals, which would make a total of nine deadlines during this European season. The round of 16, in April, could be played in two-way matches, an option favored by some in order to involve more teams, before the quarters, semi-finals and a final at the end of May.
This will have a direct impact on the calendar of the Top 14 since a ninth date would result in a third doubling with the XV of France, the weekend of France-Italy at the beginning of February at the opening of the Tournament of VI Nations (in addition to France-Argentina in November and from Scotland-France at the end of February).
Regarding the European Challenge, as we mentioned last week, the integration of four South African teams is under very advanced discussions. According to several sources, it should see the light of day for next season. But the news could only be formalized once the overhaul of the Pro 14 has been fully legally tied.
