La Rochelle won at Toulon 29-11 Saturday on behalf of the 16th day of the Top 14.
After 21 matches without defeat in its lair of Mayol, Toulon lost to a conquering team from La Rochelle (11-29), Saturday during the 16th day of Top 14. Thanks to the tests of Raymond Rhule and Samuel Lagrange, the Maritimes return to second place in the championship, while Toulon remains sixth, under threat from Lyon and Stade Français. Saturday evening, La Rochelle did not come to the Rade to have fun. In a first harsh period, where each contact left traces, the Yellow and Black camped in the Var camp.
Above all, the Toulonnais were unable to get out of their half of the field for lack of a real opener on the lawn. Without Carbonel and Serin in the France team, Belleau injured and Paia’aua suspended, general manager Patrice Collazo was forced to tinker. Indeed, if the New Zealander Isaia Toeava wore the number 10, it was his compatriot Ma’a Nonu who held the post of opener on the offensive phases and Masivesi Dakuwaqa on the defensive phases.
Too many faults among the Toulonnais
Too messy, Nonu did not manage to organize the Var game and his too short kicking game left the RCT under pressure in his half of the field. The whole meeting, the lack of opener of profession weighed down the game Red and Black. Thanks to a big defensive activity, they still limited the breakage at the break by only being led by three points.
But after half-time, La Rochelle confirmed their domination. Thanks to a magnificent game at the foot of West, the South African winger Raymond Rhule scored the first try of the match allowing his team to take off. Despite two hits not found on penalty by Anthony Meric and Toeava, the debates were rebalanced. In a highlight, the RCT was rewarded with a test at the end of the line from three-quarter center Théo Dachary. But Patrice Collazo’s men have fallen back into their pitfalls. Unable to sign a clean exit, they conceded new penalties and even a try from hooker Samuel Lagrange late in the game. Toulon will have to react quickly to Pau next week to try to catch up with the leading car while La Rochelle will host Stade Français.
