Pau’s 43-33 victory against Bayonne on Friday evening at the opening of the 21st day of the Top 14, sealed Agen’s relegation to Pro D2. Without the slightest victory since the start of the season, the club has only two points.
Relegated without playing. Last of the Top 14 with twenty defeats in as many matches and only two points, SU Agen is mathematically doomed to Pro D2 next season. The ax fell on Friday evening, with Pau’s victory in front of Bayonne (43-33) for the 21st day.
Six days from the end of the regular phase, the Agenais, eight times French champions between 1930 and 1988, can no longer catch up with either the Pau (13th, 36 pts) or Bayonne (12th, 39 pts).
The cause was understood anyway: twenty defeats, 806 points conceded, a general difference of -539, Agen, who has not collected any more points since the 8th day, seems set to do worse than Bourgoin-Jallieu 2010-2011 and its 11 little dots. Raised in 2017, the SUA has already signed the worst start to the season in the history of the Top 14, wiping out the shelves of Usap who had to wait for the 16th day to finally win during the 2018-2019 season. With six matches to go, other sad records can still be broken by Agen, such as those of Bayonne who, during the 2016-2017 season, had conceded 107 tries and conceded 905 points.
Resigned for a while
The 2020-2021 season has not been easy for the Lot-et-Garonnais, disrupted by cascading injuries, a preparation truncated by the pandemic, a fight between players, layoffs and a change of coach .
On Agen’s side, we’ve been resigned for a while anyway. “We are looking more towards next season. This is a blank season, which started very badly since we were the first club to be affected by the Covid”, explained President Jean-François Fonteneau there little. “We have other challenges, other ambitions today … We are launching our new stadium, our new performance center. We have moved on,” he added.
Smaller budget in the championship, Agen has not won since February 22, 2020, in Brive (30-16). Not sure that the last six matches will bring back a smile to the supporters: apart from Pau, on the next day, the SUA must face Toulon, La Rochelle, Bordeaux-Bègles, Racing 92 and Lyon. Only candidates for the final phase.
