While foldable smartphones are still struggling to take off, the Chinese brand TCL is already thinking about smartphones with roll-up screens. In March, the manufacturer unveiled two concepts to the media: a foldable smartphone that folds in three, as well as a smartphone with a roll-up screen.
Like foldable smartphones like the Galaxy Z Fold 2 or the Huawei Mate X, the roll-up screen smartphone can convert to a kind of tablet when the screen area is extended.
A screen that rolls up instead of folding
If this futuristic concept has impressed technophiles, TCL does not indicate for the moment when it intends to market its first smartphone with a roll-up screen. But in the meantime, new videos have leaked onto the web.
According to the TechRadar site, the videos above show a model that TCL is currently working on. One of the prototypes is said to have a 4.5-inch screen that can expand to 6.7 inches. This variable size could allow the user to have a device that fits in their pocket but can expand when they want to watch videos, for example.
The first roll-up screen smartphone in 2021?
On the other hand, we shouldn’t wait very long before TCL’s first roll-up screen smartphone hits the market. Indeed, according to another source, the manufacturer would like to release this model as soon as possible. Internally, it would be a real race. And it is possible that this one will arrive as early as 2021.
Of course, for the moment, all this information is still unofficial and should therefore be taken with a grain of salt. But in any case, a roll-up screen smartphone would position TCL as one of the most innovative companies in the smartphone market, while at the moment it is best known for its televisions.
After that, it remains to be seen whether the first roll-up screen smartphones will be resistant enough. On the other hand, one can also wonder how much a roll-up screen smartphone will cost.
Indeed, currently, their excessively high prices are one of the reasons why foldable smartphones are not taking off for the moment. However, the more production increases, the more this type of device should become accessible to consumers.
Moreover, next year, it is possible that other brands will launch their first foldable smartphones. For example, according to a rumor, in 2021, Google could launch a smartphone with a foldable screen, in addition to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 XL.
Apple patents also suggest that the Cupertino company is interested in this technology. But in the meantime, it is mainly Samsung that is betting on foldable smartphones. After launching the Galaxy Fold in 2019, the Korean giant launched the Galaxy Z Flip as well as the Galaxy Z Fold 2 this year. And rumors are already circulating about the foldable smartphone that Samsung will launch next year.
