Sexual violence in sport: a basketball coach indicted for rape in Alsace

A coach from the basketball club located in the Bas-Rhin was indicted and remanded in custody this Friday for rape and sexual assault on two underage players.

At a time when the government has drawn up an initial assessment of its fight against sexual assault within sports federations in France, AFP and the newspaper Les Latest Nouvelles d’Alsace (DNA) report a legal sanction against the coach of a basketball team in Bas-Rhin.

Coach of the La Concorde Duttlenheim team, the suspect was indicted and remanded in custody on Friday for rape and sexual assault on two underage players over 15 years old. According to a source close to the investigation contacted by AFP, a judicial investigation was opened by the Strasbourg prosecutor’s office.

A psychological unit set up

Coach of a regional women’s team in the town west of Strasbourg, the thirty-something was indicted for rape and sexual assault by a person abusing the authority conferred by his function.

According to the DNA, the club “immediately as a precautionary principle dismissed this coach” and plans to set up a psychological unit. The investigation is continuing to identify possible other victims.
