Roomba robot vacuums behave like alcoholics after an update

If you own a Roomba i7 or s9 robot vacuum and have just updated it, you might get a nasty surprise. Indeed, users complained that the machine got out of control and acted as if it was “drunk”.

Among the symptoms observed, vacuum cleaners start to spin around, bump against furniture, start diagonally from their charging station and zigzag anyhow. You can see on Reddit an example of a mad machine trying to get back to its base.

According to users, the problem happened with the upgrade to firmware 3.12.8. The machines then reverted to firmware 3.10.8, but the malfunctions did not disappear either. However, messages on the forums indicate that not all bots are necessarily impacted.

The manufacturer iRobot confirmed the problem to our colleagues at The Verge, indicating that a new update will be available in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we’ll have to get the brooms out of the cupboards.
