Roland-Garros: the ten night sessions exclusively reserved for men

INFO RMC SPORT. The 2021 edition of Roland-Garros will innovate with the establishment of a night session. But the organizers will not copy the Australian Open or the US Open, which still offer a ladies’ singles and a men’s singles. At 9 p.m., Amazon will broadcast a single match. A match in the men’s draw.

“Where are the women?” The late Patrick Juvet’s hit may be ‘brandished’ by the WTA this year at Roland Garros. According to our information, there will be a tie, between the male and female draws, in the distribution of matches at the Central Philippe Chatrier. On the other hand, these ladies will not be entitled to dessert, to the exhibition of a beautiful summer night. Amazon, which has won the exclusivity of the lot of the night session, will offer ten evenings – from Sunday May 23 to Wednesday June 2 -, with a kick off at 9 pm, with the promise of distribution of “the poster of the day”.

But according to the provisional program, the poster will automatically be a simple gentlemen. Is this a request from the new broadcaster, who will set up a platform with consultants like Amélie Mauresmo or Marion Bartoli? And who should consider that Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic are more ‘sellers’ … In this hypothesis during the day session, there would be systematically two ladies matches and a men’s match on the program at the Central to respect parity on the whole of the day … With a start of the game slightly delayed at 12 noon according to our information.

Contrary to Melbourne and the US Open

The message sent to the actresses of the circuit is quite disturbing and differs from the other two Grand Slams (Editor’s note: Wimbledon does not have a night session). In Melbourne and New York, the night session begins around 7 p.m., 7:30 p.m. with a respected mix. Even the Italian Open do this. With such a late schedule, the French organizers could not decently schedule two matches.

But to justify the price of the ticket, it is more consistent and more attractive to bet on a men’s match, best of five sets. Hoping for a Dantesque fight like the round of 16 in 2020 between Hugo Gaston and Dominic Thiem, who had experienced a peak audience of more than five million viewers. For the ticket holder, the pill would be hard to swallow if a women’s match did not exceed the hour mark, as often happens when the gap is too large between a Top player and a more anonymous player.

But, for the best French women who dreamed of treading the Philippe Chatrier under the sun lights, it’s a cold shower. A dream gone …
