An atypical game, and an evolution like no other
By economic constraint, she decides to skip the stage of the ‘Junior’ circuit, not having the means to finance herself. She then launches into the deep end at just 14 years old. Thanks to his unusual range of shots, Harmony Tan wins matches but stagnates. “She had moves that the others didn’t have, she’s a player who can do a bit of everything. She offers a lot of changes of pace, handles the cushioning well. But she was not ready. She didn’t. didn’t have the level of play to stay at that level. She started to lose, and the bad momentum set in. She could hear that she had no physique. Indeed maybe it was true when she was. young. She took a physical trainer and she is giving herself the means “, confides Nathalie Tauziat, her trainer for three years. “I don’t play like all players by hitting all the balls. I try to vary as much as possible with the effects, the ball grips. I use the slice a lot and especially the damping. It’s true that it bothers some players today, ”explains Harmony Tan.
We also had to work on the mental aspect. “She takes her time, but she lacks self-confidence. There is a long way to go. At first, we did not believe in her so much. Her family and a few people believe in her. Little by little, it comes by force. to give her the means to do more things: she attacks more, she does more things with the ball, she has improved her serve. I push her to go to the net. It is not overnight that she will clench your fists and jump in the air, ”says Nathalie Tauziat. His player abounds: “I have evolved a lot lately, I gained confidence in myself, in my game. I know how to play today with the evolution of my physique and my mental evolution”. But for the anecdote, Tan is for example still surprised that more and more good players offer him to train with her.
Passionate about music and surfing
Past the conservatory for eight years (piano), Harmony Tan has played a lot of classical music (Mozart, Beethoven), and now enjoys playing Ed Sheeran. Her other passion when she’s not on the court: surfing. A great accustomed to the South-West, she has spent as much time as possible on the board for the past fifteen years. To take advantage of this first Porte d’Auteuil victory this afternoon, she may listen to a few songs, then Harmony Tan will get back into her bubble to prepare for her second round against the finalist of the 2019 edition Marketa Vondrousova ( seed 20).
