The French record is historically low after the 1st round of Roland Garros, with only three boys and four girls who qualified. No surprise, unfortunately.
There were a total of 29 French players on the starting line of this Roland-Garros 2021. After the first round, the hecatomb is terrible, historically weak … There are only seven left to continue the adventure: Enzo Couacaud, Gaël Monfils, Richard Gasquet, Caroline Garcia, Harmony Tan, Fiona Ferro and Kristina Mladenovic.
A Roland-Garros in the image of the season
In 2021, the big French performances are not legion. There was indeed Pierre-Hugues Herbert who created a sensation at the Marseille tournament by reaching the final. But it was the only one since January on the main circuit…. The best start to the season is to the credit of Jérémy Chardy. Le Palois, ranked 37th in the Race before the start of Roland-Garros, had a great run with two semi-finals (Antalya, Melbourne 2) and two quarter-finals (Rotterdam and Dubai).
During the first Grand Slam lift of the season in Melbourne, no French were present in the second week. The best of them, Adrian Mannarino, was eliminated in the third round. At Roland Garros, the score for the first round is 3 out of 18 (Couacaud, Monfils and Gasquet). Quite simply the worst record in Porte d’Auteuil history. Unfortunately for French men’s tennis, this is a trend that is confirmed. Since already last year, the lowest total of French present in the second round (4: Herbert, Paire, Bonzi, and Gaston) had been reached, as in 2000.
The Musketeers, who have accustomed us to many second weeks over the past fifteen years, are in the twilight of their careers. And young players are really struggling to find a place in the sun permanently. For the new interim national technical director, Nicolas Escudé, there is no surprise in this starving record: “The results lately, as we know, have not lived up to expectations and their expectations. Boys as girls, on generational aspects, it lacks density, level. You have to be well aware that things are not going to be done with a snap of the fingers or with the wave of a magic wand “.
Small thinning in the female table
In the women’s draw, there is a little more blue sky with the qualifications of Fiona Ferro, Caroline Garcia, Kristina Mladenovic and Harmony Tan. But it is very weak compared to the 11 Blue entered in the final table. They also had a bad start to the season with two appearances in the third round of the Australian Open: Fiona Ferro and Kristina Mladenovic. Since then, physical problems have followed for Caroline Garcia (foot), Fiona Ferro (abdominals) Alizé Cornet (adductors) among others. And very few French players were able to really chain the matches. Which can be reassuring: the consistency of Caroline Garcia and the good feelings of Kristina Mladenovic when they enter the running.
In this difficult context, with the end of the generation of the Musketeers and a women’s tennis which is not at best, the thinning could come once again this year from the junior table. Perhaps with great promises for the future. It will be necessary to watch carefully in the boys Lucab Van Assche, Arthur Fils and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Among the girls, Océane Babel will certainly have a card to play.
