Anderlecht’s phone call to Lior Refaelov (35 years old next Monday) in early April did not go unnoticed. In the meantime, there have been several contacts between the two parties. And Refaelov is charmed by Anderlecht’s interest: he wants to come to Sporting.
Anderlecht is not the only one interested. There are even clubs that have offered him a two-year contract on better financial terms. But Refa prefers to come to Anderlecht.
However, Vincent Kompany cannot guarantee him that he will start. The priority is young people. If they show they deserve to be titular, Refaelov will be a wild card. He accepts this role. As Anderlecht is close to a European qualification, the schedule will be more busy than this season. And given the many hiccups of the young purple guard, Refaelov thinks he will get enough playing time.
If he signs, Anderlecht is counting on him to guide the youngsters.
Given his experience and his successes (2 titles and 2 Cups in Maccabi Haifa, 2 titles and a Cup in Bruges, 1 Cup in Antwerp) and given that he is an exemplary and intelligent professional, he has the ideal profile to advise and guide young talents, as Adrien Trebel and Hendrik Van Crombrugge are doing this season.
Another advantage of the Israeli: his qualities on stopped phases and his statistical impact. This season, he has scored 14 goals and given 12 assists in all competitions. And as a reminder: since it is at the end of the contract, no transfer price must be paid.
Antwerp, meanwhile, is not rushing. As often, the club waits (too?) A long time before making a decision. The uncertainty over Lucien d’Onofrio’s future does not favor the club’s transfer policy.
