Laurent Blanc and the Qatari club of Al-Rayyan lost this Friday against Al-Wahda (1-0) during the fourth day of pools of the Asian Champions League. A defeat synonymous with elimination for the former coach of PSG and the France team.
At a time when PSG will challenge Manchester City in the Champions League semi-final (Wednesday from 9 p.m. on RMC Sport 1), a poster that will surely bring back memories, Laurent Blanc and his new Al-Rayyan team have been eliminated from the Asian Champions League.
Beaten this Friday evening by the Emirati club of Al-Wahda (0-1), the Qatari team led by the former coach of Paris and Bordeaux will no longer be able to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.
Last of group E with only one point taken in four games, Al-Rayyan and Laurent Blanc will therefore leave C1 through the back door. Despite a good start to the matches during this group stage, the team led by “The President” often broke down in the last half hour.
After an inaugural draw against Goa (0-0), Al-Rayyan chained three consecutive defeats against the Iranians of Persepolis (1-3) and twice against the Emiratis of Al-Wahda (2-3 and 0-1 ).
Mixed beginnings for Blanc in Qatar
Arrived in mid-December in Qatar, Laurent Blanc had a mixed start to the adventure in the Gulf with ten victories, two draws and ten defeats in 22 matches in all competitions. Despite an unsuccessful streak of eight games, Al-Rayyan finished third in the championship behind clubs Al-Sadd and Al-Duhail.
Unhappy finalist of the Qatar Football Star Cup, the club led by the French technician still has one last chance to win a title this season. Laurent Blanc and his team have qualified for the semi-finals of the Emir’s Cup and will challenge Al-Duhail in early May.
