PSG: Is Pochettino making the worst debut under the Qatari era?

Mauricio Pochettino completed his twentieth match on the bench of PSG in the defeat against Lille (0-1) this Saturday in Ligue 1. No other coach has lost so much since the acquisition of the club by the Qatari owners in 2011.

PSG have lost big in the championship title race. Beaten by Lille at the Parc des Princes (0-1) during the shock at the top of the 31st day of Ligue 1, the Ile-de-France club is now three lengths behind the Mastiffs. Worse a few days to challenge Bayern Munich in the Champions League (Wednesday April 7 on RMC Sport 1), Mauricio Pochettino struggles to impose his style and his style on a team with too irregular performances.

Pochettino, defeats that cost a lot

Arrived during the season to succeed Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino necessarily needs time to make his mark within the Ile-de-France club. But that does not totally excuse his sad record after 20 meetings. Apart from the round of 16 first leg of C1 won in Barcelona (1-4), it is difficult to find another reference match for this PSG. A sluggish start, especially compared to the first twenty games of other Parisian coaches of the Qatari era.

In 14 Ligue 1 matches, PSG version Pochettino has already lost four times (including three times at home) and put themselves in danger for the title. In all competitions, the Argentinian has obtained 14 wins, 2 draws and 4 defeats.

On the positive side, he benefited from the postponement of the Champions Trophy due to the coronavirus to win his first title against OM in January. Insufficient to eclipse the four defeats in Ligue 1.

Percentage of wins for Pochettino in 20 games: 70%.

Tuchel, first class

Thomas Tuchel has just conceded his first defeat with Chelsea against West Bromwich (2-5). Like his early adventure with the Blues, the German coach had distinguished himself in his first twenty games with PSG during the 2018-2019 season.

Also winner of the Champions Trophy, the 47-year-old coach had signed a clear round in Ligue 1 with 14 victories in as many games. Despite an epic setback against Liverpool (3-2) at Anfield in the Champions League, Thomas Tuchel has a remarkable record during his first months in Paris with 17 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat in all competitions.

Percentage of wins for Tuchel in his first 20 games: 85%.

Passable mention for Emery

Arrived in Paris with a good odds, Unai Emery will have especially left the memory of a coach totally overwhelmed during the terrible comeback suffered at Camp Nou against Barça in the Champions League (6-1). A rout finally quite far from the beautiful promises that suggested his debut on the bench of PSG in 2016.

With a brilliant team during the Champions Trophy against Lyon (4-1), the mandate of the Basque coach began under happy auspices. Ditto in Ligue 1 with two inaugural victories against Bastia and Metz. And there patatras with a failure against Monaco (3-1), future champion, from the third day. With the exception of another hitch against Toulouse, Unai Emery will do quite well with a total of 14 wins, 4 draws and 2 losses in all competitions. If his percentage of victory is equal to that of Mauricio Pochettino, the current technician of Villarreal had conceded fewer defeats.

Percentage of wins for Emery in his first 20 games: 70%.

White in invincible mode

Having left with good severance pay in 2016, Laurent Blanc had taken care of his exit. But the former coach of the France team and coach of PSG for three seasons had also signed a good debut in Paris. In 20 games, “The President” is the only coach of the QSI era to remain undefeated.

Worn by a Cavani-Ibrahimovic duo, Laurent Blanc distinguished himself with a success in the Champions Trophy and a total of 15 wins and 5 draws in all competitions. Not bad for someone who will end up mocked by Parisian supporters after a continental disillusionment against Manchester City.

Percentage of wins for Blanc in his first 20 games: 75%.

Ancelotti, the surprising bad student

A man of trust for Qatari leaders after the club’s takeover, Leonardo quickly made Carlo Ancelotti his priority to coach the Ile-de-France team. Like Mauricio Pochettino, the Italian technician arrived during the season in January 2012. For a slightly better balance sheet than that of the Argentine.

Before falling out of favor and then leaving Real Madrid, “Le Mister” started with twelve games unbeaten. In total, after 20 games in all competitions, Carlo Ancelotti had gleaned 11 wins for 6 draws and 3 losses. If his percentage of victory is lower than that of Mauricio Pochettino, Carlo Ancelotti had conceded fewer defeats.

Percentage of wins for Ancelotti in their first 20 games: 55%.

Kombouaré, an unloved (a little) side

The situation of Antoine Kombouaré, first coach of the QSI era at PSG, is meant to be a bit special. The former defender of the Ile-de-France club was already on the bench of the first team before the arrival of the owners from the Gulf. On an ejection seat after the buyout, the Kanak coach had yet made an honorable start to the season in 2011-2012.

After twenty meetings, and with a team in full transformation after the arrival of Qatar at the club, Antoine Kombouaré finished with 13 wins, 4 draws and 3 defeats. A first impression deemed insufficient when saving his head a few months later.

Percentage of wins of Ancelotti in their first 20 games: 65%.
