Jorge Sampaoli is OM’s priority. The Argentine coach wants to return to Europe, but first wants to finish his season with Atlético Mineiro, in Brazil.
Monday, RMC Sport revealed that Jorge Sampaoli wanted to come to Olympique de Marseille. One of the Argentinian coach’s associates recognized a real interest in OM. According to our information, the 60-year-old Argentine coach is the club’s priority.
The former Sevilla coach is that of the Spanish sports director Pablo Longoria. The playing philosophy and the personality of the current coach of Atlético Mineiro convinced the staff of the Olympian club. Negotiations have started between the two parties.
An arrival in early March?
Jorge Sampaoli wants to return to Europe after his mixed spell in Seville. The former Argentina coach just asked the Marseille club to be able to finish the season with the Brazilian club on February 26. He could therefore arrive at the beginning of March at OM, if an agreement is reached.
Olympique de Marseille has been without a head coach since the dismissal as a conservatory of André Villas-Boas, sanctioned after having openly criticized the sports management at a press conference. Nasser Larguet, director of the training center, takes over the interim and found himself on the bench for the matches against Lens (2-2) and against PSG (0-2).
A single experience in Europe
After starting his coaching career in Peru, in several clubs, Jorge Sampaoli began to change dimension with his results at the Universidad de Chile, before causing a sensation by winning the Copa America 2015 with the Chilean team. It was after this title that he went to Seville, for the 2016-2017 season. He had finished in 4th place and had failed to pass the knockout stages of the Champions League (eliminated by Leicester).
Jorge Sampaoli then took over the selection of Argentina, from 2017 to 2018, before rebounding in Brazil, first with Santos, then finally with Atlético Mineiro, where his contract expires at the end of the year.
