It’s now official, Georginio Wijnaldum is a new PSG player. At the end of his contract with Liverpool, the Dutch midfielder signed up for 3 seasons with the Parisian club and became the first summer recruit for Mauricio Pochettino.
In the pipes for a few days, the arrival of Georginio Wijnaldum at PSG is now official. At the end of the contract with Liverpool, the Dutch midfielder responded favorably to the project exposed by the Parisian club with which he signed up until June 2024.
Announced for many weeks on the side of FC Barcelona for a reunion with his former coach, Ronald Koeman, Wijnaldum finally did an about-face and succumb to the Parisian sirens.
With Wijnaldum, PSG offers its first summer reinforcement for the first team – the young LOSC goalkeeper, Lucas Lavallée, coming to strengthen the U19 team. By recruiting the mid-30, free from any contract after a five-year term with the Reds, PSG achieves a nice blow and hopes to finally put an end to its long quest in the midfield.
Wijnaldum, the missing piece of the puzzle in the middle
By securing the services of Georginio Wijnaldum, PSG hope to resolve many of their problems in the middle. In search of a captain to complete its midfield for several seasons, the capital club has given itself a nice shot by attracting in its nets an experienced player whose trophy cabinet is already well stocked, with in particular a Champions League, the Cesame that PSG dreams of.
The Batavian with 74 selections has a profile capable of filling several gaps in the Parisian environment. Without being a sentinel, the thirty-something has excellent assets on the defensive plan. Able to chain races, Wijnaldum is not the type to balk at efforts thanks to his large volume of play.
Like Marco Verratti, Parisian circles are also regularly criticized for their lack of offensive input. Georginio Wijnaldum could well intensify the offensive animation of PSG, presenting an honorable statistical record for a midfielder.
With the Netherlands, the torchbearer scored 22 goals and delivered 8 assists. In club, he particularly distinguished himself at the start of his career. In Dutch D1, with PSV or Feyenoord, he scored nearly 70 goals in some 290 games and has regularly evolved as an attacking midfielder.
Despite a slight decline among the Reds (22 goals in 237 appearances) his record is most honorable and can be explained by its positioning lower on the ground. If Georginio Wijnaldum will leave a big void on the Liverpool side, he could finally fill a gap on the Paris side. PSG therefore strikes a nice blow to open its summer transfer window.
