The French Pierre-Hugues Herbert won this Friday the best victory of his career in singles by beating the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, fifth player in the world, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-2 in the quarter-finals of the ATP tournament in Marseille.
Currently 93rd in the ATP ranking, Herbert (29) is a doubles specialist, where he managed the career Grand Slam associated with Nicolas Mahut. After this success against the double defending champion in Marseille, Herbert will face another Frenchman in the semi-final, the winner of the duel between Ugo Humbert and Arthur Rinderknech.
First success against a top 5
“It’s amazing, it’s my first victory against a Top 5. I knew I had to play a great game to win and that’s what I did,” said the very offensive Herbert after the game.
“At 4-4 in the second set I made a really good breaker game and from then on I played really well. I had to go to the net, I had to do something, be aggressive , I could not win from the bottom. It worked. I am very happy with this victory, “said the Frenchman. “There will be a Frenchman in the final, that’s good. I hope it will be me,” he concluded.
