Manchester City: Laporte deprived of a goal for a shoulder too wide

Aymeric Laporte thought he had scored his first Premier League goal of the season on Tuesday against Wolverhampton (4-1). But it was called off for offside his shoulder for a few millimeters.

Everything does not smile on Aymeric Laporte this season. Regularly relegated to the Manchester City bench, the French defender only celebrated his tenth appearance with the Citizens of the 2020-2021 financial year in the Premier League on Tuesday during the large victory against Wolverhampton (4-1). He even thought of decorating it with his first league goal this year.

“I can tell I am lifting too much cast iron!”

After a cross from Riyad Mahrez deflected by Bernardo Silva, the former Athletic Bilbao player took the ball victoriously at the far post to score the 2-0 goal. But his achievement was called off for an offside of a few millimeters, as the Premier League revealers have become accustomed to. The Frenchman was amused at the end of the meeting, ironic about the fact that he was penalized by a too large musculature. “I can say that I lift a lot (of cast iron, editor’s note),” Laporte wrote on his Twitter account.

This did not prevent his team from signing a 21st victory in all competitions. Pep Guardiola’s men were again impressive against Wolves with a cascade of chances. They opened the scoring on a goal against his camp of Leander Dendoncker (15th) before being scared on the equalizer of Conor Coady (1-1, 61st). After repeated assaults, they finally cracked the opposing defense in the last ten minutes with three goals from Gabriel Jesus (80th, 90th) and Riyad Mahrez (90th), elected man of the match.

Thanks to this success, Manchester City consolidates its leadership position and is provisionally 15 points ahead of Manchester United, 2nd. Laporte, him, finds the smile during a season where he was relegated in the hierarchy of the defenders, in particular behind the English John Stones. He was all the same aligned last week during the victory on the field of Borussia Mönchengladbach (0-2) in the round of 16 first leg of the Champions League.
