Troyes and Manchester City, which belong to the same group, will not face each other in a friendly as planned on July 31st. The health restrictions linked to the coronavirus pandemic got the better of this meeting. ESTAC is looking for a new opponent.
The clash between Pep Guardiola and Laurent Batlles will not take place. Before launching its Ligue 1 season against PSG on the weekend of August 8, Troyes had to face Manchester City for a final preparatory match, on July 31. But the two clubs announced on Wednesday that the meeting will ultimately not take place, due to health constraints linked to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Both clubs have explored all avenues to be able to play the game, but recent changes by the British government to the quarantine rules for travelers returning from France have made the required restrictions too difficult to overcome, the Manchester City statement said. Pep Guardiola’s first team will remain in Manchester and continue their pre-season preparations at City Football Academy, and there are no plans to replace this friendly against ESTAC with another pre-season fixture. “
Troyes is looking for a new opponent
Laurent Batlles and his players will therefore not have the opportunity to face the last Champions League finalist. As a reminder, Troyes was bought in September 2020 by the owners of Manchester City, with the seizure of power in the Dawn of City Football Group, an Emirati investor. Troyes did not take long to find the elite, with a Ligue 2 title obtained last year. ESTAC was in the second division since the 2018-2019 season.
Between now and the official start of the season, Troyes has yet to play two friendlies, against Angers and Metz. “The cancellation of this friendly match is a strong disappointment, which the two clubs share with the supporters of Troyes, indicates the Ligue 1 club in its press release. ESTAC is already working on an alternative friendly match which could have take place at the same time. “
For Manchester City, who will start their season with the Community Shield on August 7 against Leicester, there will be only one friendly match in total at the start of the season, against Preston North End on Tuesday, July 27. In the league, Manchester City will start their season with a trip to Tottenham on August 15.
