New disillusion for Thibaut Pinot. Still embarrassed by back pain, the Frenchman announced this Saturday that he will not participate in the Giro. The boss of Groupama-FDJ, Marc Madiot, assured in the Grandes Gueules du Sport that Pinot “will resurface” despite its difficult season.
This has been going on for almost eight months. Falling during the first stage of the last Tour de France, Thibaut Pinot is unable to recover from back pain, which made him crack again during the Tour des Alpes this week, during the 5th and last stage. Still marked by this injury, the Groupama-FDJ rider announced this Saturday morning that he would not participate in the Giro, which is due to start on May 8.
The Frenchman had however made the Tour of Italy his objective for the season, to the detriment of the Tour de France. His back pain will have decided otherwise. Despite the long tunnel he goes through – Pinot had also given up after two stages in the Vuelta last October – Marc Madiot was optimistic in the Grandes Gueules du Sport this Saturday morning.
Pinot was in “an ascending phase”
Asked to comment on the rider’s decision not to participate in the Giro, the boss of Groupama-FDJ assured that Pinot will come back stronger. “I have no doubts about his willingness to resurface, and I can assure you that he will resurface. Where, when and how, it’s too early to tell,” Madiot said.
The boss of Groupama-FDJ indicated that the decision “was taken gradually over the stages of the Tour des Alpes. It was becoming more and more obvious that it was going to be complicated to participate in sufficient conditions in the Giro, therefore the decision was made in a clear manner “.
A finding that is difficult to swallow for Pinot while his training performance was “on an ascending phase”, assured Madiot, before continuing: “In terms of physical condition, all is well, he is in good shape. But when we transpose to the race, with the hazards, life in the peloton, the jolts, plus the stress of the competition, we realized that Thibaut had difficulties with his back in very intense phases.
A return to the Tour de France?
Asked about the (supposed) psychological weakness of his runner, regularly singled out for his cracks in important moments, Madiot spoke instead of a “mechanical failure”. “We suggest psychological weaknesses in Pinot, it is absolutely nothing. He is a fighter, valiant, he is perhaps even too courageous and in certain circumstances, if he had given up sooner. , we might have saved time, “added Madiot.
The head of Groupama-FDJ announced that Pinot will undergo medical examinations in the coming days in order to “find the solution”. Madiot sidestepped the question of Pinot’s possible participation in the Tour de France (June 26-July 18) as the French rider faces a problem that lasts much longer than expected. But Madiot remained optimistic, saying that, as it stands, “we are not very far from the exit of the tunnel”.
