INFO RMC SPORT. The amounts of the offers made by Amazon and by the Canal + / BeIN Sports duo are now known. The board of directors of the LFP, meeting this Friday, must choose between these two very distinct offers.
At a time when Canal + and beIN Sports were hoping to share the broadcasting rights for Ligue 1, the e-commerce giant Amazon has reshuffled the cards. The company of billionaire Jeff Bezos has formulated a competing offer to that of the encrypted channel before the board of directors of the LFP, meeting this Friday. According to information from RMC Sport, the L1 and L2 clubs will therefore have to make a major decision for the future of French football.
On the one hand, the presidents of the elite and of Ligue 2 could choose to remain faithful to the duo made up of Canal + and beIN Sports, historical broadcasters and privileged partners of the French championship. On the other hand, the millions offered by Amazon (a larger fixed portion) risk doing a crazy good for the finances of clubs weakened by the economic crisis following the coronavirus.
The offer with Amazon and Canal +: 663 million euros guaranteed
After the withdrawal of Mediapro, Amazon tried its luck during the call for tenders launched by the League in February. But the American company’s proposal had not reached the reserve price set by the LFP.
This time, Amazon is offering 250 million euros (plus production costs at 25 million euros per year) for eight matches per day in Ligue 1 and 9 million euros per year for eight matches in Ligue 2.
In this case, Canal + offers 332 million euros for two matches per day of Ligue 1 (28 choice n ° 1, 10 choice n ° 3 and 38 choice n ° 4). Partner of the encrypted channel, beIN Sports offers 30 million euros for two matches per day of Ligue 2.
The Canal + / Amazon offer = 663 million euros (guaranteed amount).
The offer with Canal + and BeIN, without Amazon
Guest of the After Foot this Wednesday on RMC, Maxime Saada, the president of the management board of the Canal + group, did not want to exceed a certain price to acquire the TV rights of Ligue 1. The proposal of the encrypted channel came to confirm the statements of the leader.
In this offer, Canal + offers 370 million euros for two matches per day of Ligue 1 (38 choice No. 1, 38 choice No. 3). The beIN Sports channel adds 165 million euros (+ 78 million euros in bonuses) for eight Ligue 1 matches per day, plus 18 million euros for the ten Ligue 2 matches per day.
It should be noted that the amount paid by Free for the quasi-direct and VOD rights (42 million euros per season) is taken into account in both offers.
Canal + / beIN Sports = 595 million euros (guaranteed amount) + 78 million euros of variable portion, or potentially 673 million euros.
