It is the restyling of the current generation that dates from 2017, but this 4×4 has been on the market for more than 30 years. The 2021 Land Rover Discovery has just been unveiled – now also hybridized.
On the outside, the changes are very light and, as almost always in the restyling, the bumpers (both front and rear), grill, front LED lights, taillights, now dynamic turn signals, and wheel design have been updated.
Some proportions have also been redesigned, such as on the side, which has increased that of the body with respect to the glass surface. If we talk about the R Dynamic version, it will have several elements in black, such as the wheels, the roof, etc … that will give it a more sporty and dynamic overview.
Inside the new Land Rover, more work has been done. For starters, its steering wheel (with tactile buttons) and gear lever are new and it mounts a brighter, 11.4-inch central touch screen, which houses the PIVI Pro infotainment system, already seen in the most current models of the brand. Through this screen, the rear seats can also be folded electrically.
Onboard, more storage compartments have been arranged to reach a total capacity of almost 42 liters, with even holes in the doors for 1.5-liter bottles. It will also have wireless charging for smartphones or WiFi connection.
All this not to mention it’s 7 seats and a boot with an automatic opening electric gate passing the foot under the rear bumper. 258 liters will remain in it with all seats in place. If you lower the two in the third row, you will have a 1,231-liter ‘cave’ and if you lower the rear five, the 2021 Land Rover Discovery becomes a van with a capacity of 2,485 liters.
In addition, when the gate is opened, in one piece, a kind of lower gate appears that supports 300 kilos of weight and in which up to 3 adults can sit. There is also a kind of step on the side, in the front area, to be able to climb and reach things that we have placed on the roof, such as bicycles, surfboards, etc …
Behind the wheel, a 12.3-inch TFT screen houses the digital driver information clocks. The seats have also been redesigned and an ionizing filter has been incorporated into the cabin to purify the air that enters it. And its 360-degree cameras have also been improved that will help both with its advanced automatic parking system, and when driving on difficult terrain.
Mechanics with light hybridization
Yes, but not all. 4 engines arrive, two diesel and two gasoline. The first two, with hybridization of 48V both, that is to say, of the Mild Hybrid type. They are the D250 of 250 CV and the D300, of 300 CV. Both have 6 cylinders and 3.0 liters of displacement. Among the gasoline, the small one is a 4-cylinder with 300 hp (P300) without hybridization and the P360, also of the Mild Hybrid type like the diesel, and 360 hp, and 6 cylinders.
Regarding its suspension, it will be pneumatic and may vary in height by 11.5 cm. Of course, it will have the control system of its 4×4 Terrain Response 2 traction and will be able to wade through areas of water up to 900 mm. Its towing capacity is promised to be the maximum allowed in all the countries to be marketed.
The first units will arrive from February 2021 and their starting price will be 70,500 euros.
