Italy-Spain: what Chiellini said to Alba during the penalty draw

It was a fun scene for spectators on Tuesday at Wembley in the first Euro 2021 semi-final between Italy and Spain. At the time of the draw to determine in which surface the penalty shoot-out was to be played, a misunderstanding arose between Jordi Alba and Giorgio Chiellini, the two captains.

And if Italy had perhaps won its semi-final against Spain (1-1, 4-2 ap tab) thanks to its captain Giorgio Chiellini. At the time of the “toss” with his counterpart Jordi Alba, the experienced defender of the Nazionale made the show, disturbing the left side while the referee of the meeting, Felix Brych, made the draw before the shooting session to goal.

Confusion at the time of the draw

“Liar, you liar,” Chiellini reportedly blurted out Alba, according to As, when the latter tried to take penalties in front of the Spanish fans. A small misunderstanding thus took place after the throw of the room to know which side the session was going to take place. No one had chosen a side for the play, this choice being made for this draw by the referee. And fate had designated the Italian side, despite Alba’s claims.

Marca reports that Jordi Alba thought he had won the first draw, which Giorgio Chiellini refuted, with the support of the referee. In the end, it was therefore the Italian defender who won this first draw, which allowed him to choose to shoot in front of the Italian supporters, present in Wembley stadium for the occasion.

Then followed from Giorgio Chiellini several gestures and teasing towards Jordi Alba, much more concentrated than the Italian captain and seeming not to appreciate the scene. A few minutes later, Jorginho scored the victorious penalty for Italy, which will play the final at Wembley on Sunday. Roberto Mancini’s team will face the winner of Wednesday (9 p.m.) between England and Denmark.
