Winner on the Giro at the top of Monte Zoncolan this Saturday, Lorenzo Fortunato is at the origin of the immense joy of Alberto Contador, boss of the Eolo-Kometa team. The Spaniard even challenged himself in response to the victory.
Alberto Contador never won at Monte Zoncolan as a rider, but he has now done so in the shoes of a manager. It was Lorenzo Fortunato, climber of the Eolo-Kometa team created by Contador in 2018, who offered this little pleasure to the Spaniard. For his first participation in the Giro, Eolo-Kometa marks the spirits with this success at the top of one of the biggest Italian passes.
During a live broadcast on Instagram, Alberto Contador, winner of the Giro in 2008 and 2015, did not contain his joy at the time of arrival. Faced with several thousand viewers, he savored the last few hundred meters of the climb in which Fortunato had a handful of seconds ahead of his pursuers. After more than 180 kilometers of breakaway, the Italian won the greatest success of his career, and the most beautiful, too, in the history of Eolo-Kometa.
A 1,500-kilometer bike ride
“We will go from Pinto (in the province of Madrid, editor’s note) to Milan by bike,” Alberto Contador announced to his followers. The Spaniard had made this promise before the start of the Giro in the event of his team’s stage victory. A journey of more than 1,500 kilometers, which involves crossing half of Spain, France and part of Italy.
For the Eolo-Kameta team, led by the gunslinger and of which Ivan Basso is one of the sports directors, this victory confirms the entry into a new dimension. The structure’s budget has greatly increased this season with the arrival of sponsor Eolo and this first Giro is already a success. Contador, he now has a big exit to prepare.
