The coach of the France team Didier Deschamps commented on the defeat of the Bleuets at the Euro Espoirs. A huge disappointment, acknowledged Deschamps, who nevertheless praised the work of his counterpart, Sylvain Ripoll.
“Counter-performance yes, but regrets, above all.” Present at a press conference on the eve of the first preparatory match for the Blues on the way to the Euro (June 11-July 11), Didier Deschamps defended Sylvain Ripoll and the Espoirs, eliminated in quarters of their Euro by the Netherlands, Monday evening, in Budapest. The France team definitely does not succeed in this category, despite an incredibly rich workforce.
“The result leads to a certain analysis. What is it? A goal in the 92nd”, relativized Deschamps. But this quarter-final of the 2021 edition is on the other hand a real and great disappointment, even if the way it ended, with a Dutch goal against in the last seconds of added time, is cruel. “There is a huge disappointment, from there to question everything …”, continued Deschamps.
“I’m not going to be Sylvain’s lawyer, but for how many years has the France team not qualified? They qualified, it was played out little by little.” Euro Espoirs is a competition that does not go to the French, it’s true. The one and only title dates back to 1988, the last final in 2002. The 2019 semi-final in Italy was deemed satisfactory, as it arrived after long years of absence.
The Hopes selection continues its Stations of the Cross
For Deschamps, who did not see the first period, the Blues were dominating, and the changes made by Sylvain Ripoll “brought something”. The excellent entry of Caqueret, in particular, indeed offered several opportunities to the players of Ripoll, with a strike from Tchouaméni (73rd) or a diving header from Aouar (90th). But while the Netherlands were only waiting for a counter, Kluivert sowed Maouassa and found Boadu, who with his double buried the Bleuets.
“It’s a disappointment, there was the potential to continue, even if I don’t forget that there were unforeseen events,” Deschamps insisted, as if to relieve his counterpart of part of his responsibilities. The coach is certainly referring to the absences of Randal Kolo Muani and Alban Lafont, retained by FC Nantes to play the maintenance of the club on the occasion of a play-off won against Toulouse. The Hopes selection continues its Stations of the Cross at the Euro. Some of the players who make it up will still have a second chance this summer, at the Tokyo Olympics.
