Personal details such as the names, phone numbers of around 61 lakh Indians using Facebook have been allegedly ‘leaked online’ and have been posted on hacking forums. An official associated with the cyber security company Hudson Rock gave this information. The company’s co-founder and chief technology officer Alan Gaal said that personal details of about 53.3 million Facebook users worldwide have reportedly been leaked online and were put on hacking forums for free. Of these, 61 lakh users are from India. The details leaked include the name, phone number and other information. Globally, as of December 31, 2020, Facebook had 2.80 billion total active users. Gaal wrote on Twitter, “53 million Facebook records have been leaked for free. This means that if you have a Facebook account, it is very likely that the phone number used for this account has been leaked. “The tweet mentions the number of Facebook users from different countries, details of which are public Has happened. Of these, 61 lakh users are from India. 3.23 million are from the United States, 1.15 million are from the UK and 73 million are from Australia.
When contacted, a Facebook spokesperson said, “This is an old figure, which was reported in 2019. We resolved this issue in August, 2019. “Cheek said that a flaw had come to light in early 2020. Through this, the phone number associated with the Facebook account could be seen. Using this, the figure of 53.3 million users from different countries around the world has been leaked.
He said that the leaked data of the users included details of the phone number, Facebook ID and full name. Gaal said that some wrong people can use this information for ‘social engineering’, scams, hacking and marketing. Facebook has faced challenges regarding data security in the past.
In March 2018, Facebook-linked data of 56.2 lakh Indians was allegedly breached. Cambridge Analytica had information about around 8.7 million such users globally. According to government figures, 53 crore people in India use WhatsApp, while 41 crore use Facebook and 21 crore Instagram.
