Europa League: Manchester United and Roma take a step towards the last four, Arsenal struggling

The quarter-finals first leg of the Europa League were played this Thursday evening (on RMC Sport). Manchester United and Roma have taken an option on the last four, but everything remains to be done on the return, for them and for Villarreal. Arsenal and Ajax are in the hard.

Very well on the way to grab the podium, or at least the Top 4 in the Premier League, Manchester United would not be against lifting a trophy at the end of the season. A Europa League? This is the idea. Still competing in the competition, the Red Devils took an option on Thursday evening in the semi-finals, obtaining the victory in Granada in the quarter-final first leg (2-0).

Jostled by the Andalusians at the start of the game, Paul Pogba and his comrades delayed, then made the difference around the half hour mark, when Marcus Rashford took advantage of a superb opening from Victor Lindelöf to adjust the opposing goalkeeper (1- 0, 31e). Despite an almost immediate reaction from Granada, who found the post of De Gea (41st), the result was only management, or almost, until the second goal of Bruno Fernandes from the penalty spot (2-0, 90th) . Sufficient to approach the return in good shape. Ah, yes: a very naked man has managed to enter the lawn.

Arsenal and Ajax punished

The other English club engaged in C3, Arsenal, had to settle for a draw at home against Slavia Prague (1-1). The Gunners have generally dominated but have long failed in the last move. Willian rolled a free kick on the post of Kolar (49th), before Lacazette found the bar on a face-to-face with the goalkeeper (62nd) and Aubameyang completely missed the target at close range (78th). Nicolas Pepe thought he had released his own at the very end of the game (1-0, 86th), but Holes equalized on a set piece at the end of added time (1-1, 90th + 4). Londoners will therefore have to seek qualification in the Czech Republic. An important qualification, insofar as Mikel Arteta’s men will have a hard time getting a ticket for Europe via the championship …

In Amsterdam, Roma signed a nice little hold-up against Ajax (2-1). And the Dutch club can bite their fingers … While leading after Klaassen’s opener (1-0, 39th), Tadic missed the penalty from 2-0 to 53rd. And inevitably, Roma equalized in stride, on a free kick from Pellegrini, or rather a ball from the young goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen (1-1, 57th). Half an hour later, against the course of the game, Ibanez offered the victory to the Italians with a superb end (2-1, 87 ‘).

In the last poster of the evening, Villarreal won 1-0 at Dinamo Zagreb, thanks to a penalty from Gerard Moreno before the break (44th). It is already the 24th goal of the season for the former Espanyol.

The results of the quarter-finals first leg:

– Granada 0-2 Manchester United

– Arsenal 1-1 Slavia Prague

– Ajax 1-2 AS Roma

– Dinamo Zagreb 0-1 Villarreal
