The press attaché for the Swedish national team, vying for the Euro which starts on Friday, had to apologize for appearing in a photo with a beer in his hand. And for good reason: players and staff members are not allowed to be in official attire if they show themselves consuming alcohol.
A beer, yes, but not with just any outfit. The press secretary for the Swedish national team had to apologize, after a photo posted on his Instagram account. He appeared there with a foam in his hand, on the roof terrace of a hotel in Stockholm, surrounded by internationals Alexander Isak and Robin Quaison (who had no glass). But, above all, the communicator posed with the official clothes of the selection.
While drinking alcohol in the context of a rally is permitted, the regulations of the Swedish Football Association prohibit any such consumption while in national team clothing. Including when it comes to a snapshot taken on the occasion of the country’s national holiday (June 6), as specified by the communications manager in the caption of his publication on Instagram.
“It is a mistake”
“Sometimes we are wrong. We must accept and apologize”, reacted the person, Jakob Kakembo Andersson, who deleted the publication in question, while he must also manage the media pressure around the two positive cases in coronavirus which have been identified within the workforce a few days before the start of the Euro.
“We spoke to each other and we moved on. (…) We must not make things more important than they are,” reacted Håkan Sjöstrand, general secretary of the Swedish federation, according to a transcription of Mundo Deportivo. “There is nothing strange, we agree that it is an error that has occurred. We have spoken and we are looking forward,” he insisted.
Asked by the Swedish press, the secretary general was asked to clarify the regulation on alcohol consumption. He recalled it: impossible for players and staff to appear in public with a beer in hand, while they are in professional attire. “If it was free time, ok. There is some during these long gatherings. When the last game is played and we go our separate ways, we can have a glass of wine or a beer.” But in this case, you have to change first.
