Like the France team, several selections were playing friendly matches on Wednesday, to build up the pressure a few days before the kickoff of the Euro. England did the minimum union against Austria, the Netherlands and Germany were hung.
Netherlands draw happy draw thanks to Depay
In an experimental 5-3-2, the Netherlands were not necessarily reassured this Wednesday evening against Scotland, before the Euro. With the announced packages of Jasper Cillessen (Covid-19) and Virgil Van Dijk (too short after his cruciate ligament rupture), Frank De Boer took advantage of this friendly meeting to make some changes in his starting lineup.
Young Ajax defender Jurrien Timber made his first debut in the Oranje jersey. But the Dutch will be the first to be surprised. On a risky raise, Jack Hendry grabs the ball and deceives Tim Krul.
But the reaction of the Netherlands will not be long in coming. On a good rebate from Georginio Wijnaldum, Memphis Depay offered a nice goal on a controlled volley. Announced in the viewfinder of FC Barcelona, the two men allowed the Netherlands to pick up the score.
Eye-catching and efficient, the Scots regained the advantage shortly after the hour mark. On a counter-attack pattern, Andrew Robertson delivered a perfect cross for Kevin Nisbet, who scored his first goal in the selection. With great difficulty in being dangerous, the Netherlands waited until the last minutes to return to the score, once again thanks to Memphis Depay, the providential man, on a direct free kick. The Oranje have not really sent positive signals 11 days before their entry into the Euro contests against Ukraine (June 13).
Germany and Denmark neutralize each other
Direct opponent of the France team, Germany failed to win against Denmark. And yet, Joachim Low’s players tried, tried a lot. With 10 shots fired in the first half, the Germans returned to the locker room with a goalless draw 0-0.
Without Kroos, Goretzka, Gundogan and Havertz, the thinning came from Florian Neuhaus, in a fox style of surfaces. The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder scored points tonight, showing himself to his advantage in the game and punctuating his good performance with a second goal in the selection.
But that was not going to be enough for Germany. On a marvelous opening from Christian Eriksen, Yannick Poulsen went to deceive the vigilance of Manuel Neuer and allowed Denmark to return to the game.
Well in place, the Danes stood up to this German selection which will play a second friendly match against Letonnie (June 7) before challenging the French team (June 15).
The minimum union for England
Another meeting of the evening, England started their preparation for the Euro with a meeting against Austria. In a composition that will not be the one that Gareth Southgate will align in a few days, including Jesse Lingard who will leave the rally before the Euro, the English have done the job.
Thanks to a goal from Bukayo Saka shortly before the hour mark, the Three Lions passed their Austrian counterparts. The young Arsenal winger scored his first goal in the selection, he who was called for the first time last fall.
The English will have the opportunity to confirm their good momentum against Romania in four days before entering the competition against the last finalist of the 2018 World Cup, Croatia (June 13).
