What is plan
According to the proposal, the three-year Honors Courses of DU will be made four years. That is, students will not get honors degree in three years. If a student leaves the course after the first or second year, he will be given certificate and diploma respectively. Honors degree will be given only after completing four years. Such language courses and smaller departments will be closed which do not offer honors courses.
Why is there protest
It is worth noting that DU also started four years of UG programs (FYUP) in 2014. But it was canceled by the government in the same year after heavy opposition from students and teachers. Now many teachers say that DU will repeat the same mistake again by starting four years of programs again.
Academic Council member Seema Das said, ‘I suggest that the number of major subjects should not be reduced by the third year. So that if a student wants to do research in the fourth year, then he will give the necessary foundation for the knowledge research of those subjects.

St Stephen’s College Associate Professor Nandita Narayan said that ‘it is unfortunate that DU did not learn from its previous failure. Especially in the direction of educational reform. The four years of the new education policy have a lot of complexities in degree programs. The university should not take any such decision in haste without consulting students and teachers.
