Cycling: "I would suffer needlessly", Pinot renounces the Tour of Italy

Still embarrassed by back pain, Thibaut Pinot made the decision, in consultation with Groupama-FDJ, not to start the Giro, his main objective for the 2021 season.

“I cannot hide: I am not in a condition to shine on the Giro. I would suffer needlessly and I would not be able to help the team. It is not even a question of form, but the back pain keeps me from performing. It’s hard to explain. ” In a press release published this Saturday, Thibaut Pinot announces that he will not take the start of the Giro this year (May 8-May 30, 2021). Still in the grip of back pain, he therefore gives up his main goal for the 2021 season, he who had already chosen to skip the Tour de France.

“Not competing in the Tour of Italy is heartbreaking”

The French climber (30) has suffered from his back since his fall in the first stage of the Tour de France at the end of August in Nice (cracked sacrum and iliac bones). Friday, he described as “castrophic” his record of the Tour of the Alps, which was to serve as a test before the Tour of Italy. “Every day I gave everything I had in my stomach. Not competing in the Giro d’Italia is heartbreaking, we did everything to be there! We really did our best so that I could take the start with the form which is normally mine. I am disappointed but I think of the continuation. I want to heal myself, to leave these back problems behind me to regain my level and to fight with the best “, he indicates in its press release.

“We have done everything possible so that Thibaut Pinot can return to his level. We are disappointed but we cannot regret, neither him nor us, to have wanted to believe it. He fought until end on this Tour of the Alps but his body will not allow him to compete with the best for three weeks. Thibaut is going through an ordeal, we will of course give him the necessary time to come back “, supports Marc Madiot, the manager of Groupama-FDJ .
