UEFA unveiled the Champions League Team of the Season, won by Chelsea against Manchester City on Saturday. Three French and three PSG players are in this group of 23.
The list of 23 is down! That of the best players in the 2020-2021 Champions League, unveiled by UEFA on Monday, two days after Chelsea’s victory in the final against Manchester City (1-0). The Blues are also the most represented with seven players (Mendy, Azpilicueta, Rüdiger, Chilwell, Jorginho, Mount, Kanté) in this selection comprising three goalkeepers, six defenders, eight midfielders and six attackers.
Finalist, Manchester City has five representatives (Ederson, Ruben Dias, De Bruyne, Gündogan, Foden). The six forwards of this solid squad were all eliminated before the final, like the competition’s top scorer, Erling Haaland (10 goals), who came out in the quarter-finals with Borussia Dortmund by Manchester City.
Mbappé, Kanté and Benzema for the French
Author of a superb run, interrupted in the semi-final by Manchester City, PSG places three players in this team: its captain Marquinhos, Kylian Mbappé (second top scorer with 8 goals) and Neymar. Three French people in total are present: Mbappé, Kanté and Karim Benzema who carried Real Madrid at arm’s length. His six goals in this edition allowed him to join Raul in 4th place for all-time top scorers in the Champions League (71 goals). Lionel Messi completes the cast of attackers.
In total, eight teams are represented in this Dream Team. Haaland (Dortmund), Messi (Barcelona) and Sergio Oliveira (Porto) are the sole representatives of their respective teams. Bayern, winner in 2020, places two players with David Alaba and Robert Lewandowski just like Real with Luka Modric and Benzema, therefore.
