Dominators in the Champions Cup this season, Toulouse and La Rochelle will also compete for the European player of the year trophy. The five nominated for this award come from the two French clubs, including Antoine Dupont on the Toulouse side.
With five representatives in the quarter-finals, three in the semi-finals and two in the final, the French clubs largely dominated the 2020-2021 Champions Cup. Logically, the European player of the year will therefore come from their ranks and more precisely from the two finalists: Toulouse and La Rochelle.
The EPCR, organizer of the competition, published on Tuesday the list of the five nominated for this trophy. Quadruple European champions (1996, 2003, 2005 and 2010), the Toulousains place three players: the French internationals Antoine Dupont and Julien Marchand, as well as the veteran New Zealand Jerome Kaino (38 years).
On the Rochelais side, Grégory Alldritt and Will Skelton, impressive in the semifinals against Leinster, are in the running for this trophy, which would reward a little more the beautiful European season of the Maritimes.
A mixture of votes from the public and specialists
The winner will be determined by mixing the votes of the public and a jury of specialists including Dimitri Yachvili and Bryan Habana. He will receive his trophy at the end of the Champions Cup final on May 22 at Twickenham.
If Alldritt, Dupont or Marchand wins, this award, created in 2010, would go to a French player for the first time.
