Bayern confirmed Saturday the 31st German league title in its history, thanks to the defeat of Leipzig in Dortmund (3-2). The Munich club will (finally) have a fifth star embroidered on its jersey. Because in the Bundesliga, the rule is precise.
Have you ever wondered why some clubs have stars on their shirts, like the world championship selections do? The title of German champion of Bayern is then the opportunity to look into this rule. Thanks to the defeat of Leipzig in Dortmund on Saturday (3-2), the Munich club won the championship for the 31st time in its history. For the occasion, he will have a fifth star embroidered.
31 titles, not a round number but who validates one more star? In the Bundesliga, the rule has been established since 2004 by the German League concerning this little extra on the tunic of the clubs: one star for three championship titles, two stars for five trophies, three stars for ten coronations, four for 20. The fifth valid 30 league titles.
The creation date of the Bundesliga
The Bavarians were yet 30 times crowned since last season. This season’s title is certainly the 31st in Bayern history … but the 30th since the official creation of the Bundesliga in 1964. The first title, dating from 1932, therefore does not count in the race for the stars.
To make a little point on the other championships, know that in France, there is no precise rule. Saint-Etienne has a star on his jersey for his ten league titles, while OM has one for his Champions League coronation. No rule either in England, where the possible stars of the badges have a simple decorative value or are embroidered on the initiative of the clubs, which can decide or not to mark the occasion.
The case of Juve
In Italy, on the other hand, it’s like in Germany: one star for ten titles. Juventus is also the pioneer of the star system on a club’s jersey: it was to celebrate its tenth coronation in 1958. For the anecdote, between 2012 and 2014, the Turinese played with a starless jersey but the inscription “30 on the field”, in reference to the two Scudetti of 2005 and 2006 removed for a match fixing scandal which had earned the club to be relegated to Serie B. The official third star arrived in 2014.
