A meeting that followed the heavy Bordeaux defeat in Saint-Étienne (4-1) could well have allowed the Girondin locker room to re-mobilize, while the club struggles to avoid maintenance.
While the players and staff seemed on the edge of the precipice, after the new rout in Saint-Étienne (4-1), smiles were present at Haillan this week before challenging Monaco on Sunday. Disconcerting for a Bordeaux team which remains on ten defeats in the last twelve games and which has just conceded 13 goals in the last four meetings. One event however reboosted the Girondins well: a collective meeting was held this Tuesday in Haillan.
Technical staff, players but also medical staff, members of security, video sector: all employees close to the pro group were invited to participate. Alain Roche, the sports director, and Frédéric Longuépée, the president, were not present. The meeting, short but very intense, made it possible to burst numerous abscesses. While great tensions exist in the group, several close to the locker room saw different players take a step towards each other.
The executives assume their statutes
The result: a much happier working atmosphere in training this week. “We spent a very pleasant week in the field, confirms Jean-Louis Gasset. We felt like a weight that had fallen.” The various executives have decided to assume their status. “The group has been aware of the situation for a long time,” says former captain Benoit Costil, who was making his first appearance at a press conference since January 20, 2020. “But it takes a click and stop feeling sorry for his fate Believe me, we weren’t always kind to ourselves in our discussions. Maybe it’s time to see things with a little more positivity. Unity is strength, let’s come together . We are together, we are going to get out of it together and, next year, Bordeaux will be in L1. “
The statements and attitudes during this meeting did a lot of good to the technical staff, totally dejected after the slap received in Saint-Étienne. Jean-Louis Gasset, in particular, felt powerless in the face of the situation and no longer saw how to remobilize his players. “I have the impression that we are realizing things on April 12, blows the coach. Better late than never. If we play six good games and take the points, that will be very positive. But they said to themselves what I have been telling them for eight months … “
Six matches cleavers
The group has come together, and the players and staff have made a pact, with specific objectives for the last six games. The locker room has also promised to remain united and to avoid leaks in the press, while several statements had challenged in recent weeks. The presence of the employees also made the players face up to their responsibility with people who “work for them on a daily basis.”
Management also spoke with a few senior players to re-mobilize them for the last six games of this season. A speech that seems to have borne fruit: at the club, we seem to finally pull in the same direction to get out of the crisis. If the Girondins have never totaled so few points at this stage of the season over the past 20 years, the internal dynamic finally seems to be reversed, for the first time since the end of January. Now all that remains is to demonstrate it on the ground.
