It is no longer uncommon for football players to temporarily skip sports sections to invite themselves to news pages. With their high salaries and assurances of their absence on game nights, players are prime targets of thieves and burglaries are on the rise. As Le Figaro revealed on Thursday, this increase in the number of thefts puts the police on alert.

In an internal note distributed to all services, which the national daily was able to consult, police counted 21 break-ins in 2021, eight more than the previous year. Since the start of 2022, seven football players have already paid the price for this common practice.

Special “Gang”

What worries competent authorities is that “gangs” specializing in theft of footballers are now at large. “If part of the cases can be attributed to the theft of opportunities made in upscale neighbourhoods, more specialized teams are at work”, assures commissioner William Hippert, boss of Cirasco (criminal intelligence service) in Figaro’s column.
