Monaco need not worry about the goalkeeper position. At least for the moment. Alexander Nubel, who was loaned to AS Monaco for two seasons by Bayern Munich in 2021, confirmed with Bild that he will still be at The Rock next season. “I will play at AS Monaco next season. My loan contract here is for two years,” says the 25-year-old goalkeeper. Coming back to Munich this summer is not an option. If Bayern have something else in mind, we have to Talk about it. But that’s not an option for me at the moment.”

Nubel’s future is closely tied to that of Manuel Neuer, for whom he is the designated successor at Bayern, unlikely to return to Bavaria as long as the 36-year-old German international is still in place. “If Manuel Neuer is there, he will play. And I don’t think I will return to Bayern again,” commented the German. If they wish, Bayern can activate a clause stating that Nubel can return to Bavaria after a year.

Arriving at the Principality last summer to gain experience while waiting to take over from Neuer, Nubel had a complicated start. Conceded faulty on several goals and not as decisive as desired, it took a few months for the former German international Hope (17 caps) to show what he was capable of. Currently the second best goalscorer in Ligue 1 in terms of unexpected saves (PSxG), behind Walter Benitez, Nübel made his mark in Ligue 1. Much to the delight of Bayern, who patiently await the return of Neuer’s heir.
