Ligue 1: Monaco stops Rennes and returns to the foot of the podium, Rennes loses big

In a decisive match for Europe, Monaco took the best of Rennes (3-2) in Ligue 1 this Friday and temporarily moved to fourth in the championship. Breton is missing out on a big chance of taking second place in the OM.

Rennes could consolidate his Ligue 1 podium, return to OM, second, and almost eliminate Monaco from the Champions League race. Instead, Breton lost 3–2 at home at the start of the 32nd day, against Monegasque who are provisionally fourth in the championship, right on Rennes’ heels.

Bruno Genacio’s players, however, ideally started with Flavian Tait’s opener after only three minutes of play. From 1 October 2021 onwards. But very quickly, Rennes let Monaco back into the game.

Ben Yedder, 19th goal of the season

On a fine start from Alexander Golovin, Vanderson equalized before the quarter-hour mark. The first blow that seemed to paralyze Rennes, the best attack in the championship but without motivation this evening. ASM did it again at the start of the second half thanks to Wissam Ben Yedder. Launched deep at the boundary of offside, the Monegasque skipper perfectly adjusted Alemdar for 2-1. His 19th goal of the season in the league, only bettered by Kylian Mbappe.

In the last half hour, Rennes pushed but a little too disorderly. Nubel stood brilliantly on Martin’s strike, Ben Yeder came out for Bodu and the Dutchman stood out as well, the author of the third goal on Vandersson’s offer to kill the game.

Monaco do very well against the big

In extra time, Martin Terrier reduced the score on penalties, following a foul by Sofiane Diop on Adrian Truffert. He also has his 19th goal of the season, but there is a story. Monegasque signed off on their fourth consecutive win in Ligue 1, a first for them this season.

Above all, Monaco confirmed their good series against the leaders of the championship. The princely club have won their last four Ligue 1 matches against teams ranked on the podium: Paris and Marseille were in March, and Rennes twice, back tonight in the first leg. While looking forward to the meetings in Nice and Strasbourg on Sunday, Monaco has its eyes fixed on the podium and still dreams of the Champions League.
