The surprise elimination of FC Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Europa League doesn’t really suit French football. Because it removes the chance for third in Ligue 1 to be invited to the group stages to avoid round two of the Champions League play-offs next summer.

Ligue 1 is in the third straight pool if the winner of the Europa League has already qualified for the Champions League.

Article 3.04 of the Competition Rules actually states that: “If the holder of the UEFA Europa League title qualifies for the group stage of the competition through his/her domestic league, (…) the access list (France, editor’s note). ) the club ranked third in the league by association, and the league path will be rebalanced accordingly, with the club of the highest ranked association in the relevant round of the access list being given priority”.

In other words, the third qualifying round, then the third in Ligue 1 to avoid the play-offs, is relying on an already qualified team’s title through its championship in the Champions League. Barca, firmly in the top 4 of La Liga, seemed to be in the best position to fulfill this condition and offer a less busy summer for a future third in Ligue 1. But he was released. Now the best chance is called Leipzig.

Christopher Nkunku’s team are currently fourth in the Bundesliga and virtually qualified for the next Champions League. But his margin on his chaser is narrow (Friborg, three points from the end, 5th on day five). In the next round, the Germans will challenge Glasgow Rangers, who are currently second in their championship (which only gives them a place in the second qualifying round).

The other two teams in the race are also starting away, notably Frankfurt, 9th in the Bundesliga, 12 points from the top 4. West Ham, their opponents, still have a chance to break into the top 4 in the Premier League but the task will be difficult (6th 6th point from 4th to the end). Last season, Monaco, third in Ligue 1, were expected to succeed Manchester United in the Europa League final, which would have qualified them directly to the Champions League. But the Red Devils lost to Villarreal (1–1, 11 tab 10) and fell in the play-off against Monaco Shakhtar Donetsk (0–1, 2–2).

Rennes had been lucky in 2020-2021 as Sevilla FC’s success in the Europa League in 2020 allowed him to climb straight into the pool. Two years later, Breton are again in third place seven days from the end and will welcome Leipzig’s success in the Europa League if they keep their place. They would call on the help of teammates Christopher Nkunku, already greatly appreciated in the Breton capital as they missed a goal in the final of the Coupe de France against PSG (2-2, 6 tab 5), which won the title. was offered to Rennes.
