Shock mixed with indignation. The Catalan press is struggling to take the blow of FC Barcelona’s exit in the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday. After a draw in the first leg (1–1) in Germany, the Catalans fell at home against Frankfurt (2–3), which also led 3–0. Spain’s two goals in stoppage time did not change anything. Xavi’s men are completely disillusioned after returning to the competition after their elimination in the Champions League group stage last December.

The hangover is felt in one of the dailies. Mundo Deportivo uses German semantics on its cover: “Kaput en el Kamp Nou” which needs no translation. The newspaper thus makes reference to an impressive delegation of German supporters who invaded Barça over 30,000! This grand presence is crumbling even within the club. Xavi thus condemned that so many opposing fans were able to attend the meeting.

The city’s other sports newspaper is more traditional but equally disjointed: “What a disappointment!”. Sergio Busquets, disappointed, shows up to this shattering failure.

the irony of madrid press

The tone is different in Madrid media, being more sarcastic and joking like Marca, which features a witty front page: “El Barca Vuelca” (Barca is moving) in an ironic nod to recent statements in the Catalan ranks. promises that Barca was back (“El Barca Vuelve”).

Players, staff and leaders claimed after a series of fifteen consecutive matches without defeat, including a slap (0-4) at Real Madrid’s ground. So the press in the Spanish capital is delighted with this defeat which falls badly while Merengues is still the massive leader in La Liga (12 points ahead and one match more than Barca) and qualified for the Champions League semi-finals.
