Mumbai, April 11: Chris Morris, the most expensive player of the Indian Premier League (IPL) so far, will face a major challenge when the Rajasthan Royals (RR) face the Punjab Kings in their first match of the league’s 14th season at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday. After Joffra Archer was ruled out of the first part of the IPL season due to injury, Morris would have to assume the responsibility of his team’s frontline bowler as the challenge would be to stop the Punjab Kings’ power-packed batting on RR. The biggest problem of RR is the lack of foreign fast bowlers. Last year, Archer failed to get any support from others as only the spinners performed well. This time however, Morris should have the support of fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman.

However, whether Rahman can get a place in the playing XI or not, it will also be a matter to be seen. With batsman Jose Butler, all-rounder Ben Stokes and Morris, of course, RR will have to think a lot about including Rahman in the playing XI as he also has other hard hitting batsmen like Liam Livingstone and David Miller. Rajasthan Royals cricket director Kumar Sangakkara told the media on Sunday afternoon, “Both Sanju (Samson) and I will agree that the absence of Jofra Archer is a big shock for us.” Joffra is a very important part of our composition and it is unfortunately not a reality. We have to work around it and plan accordingly.

So while Mumbai’s wicket is batting friendly, it is likely that RR will go with Rahman who is known for diversifying with his cutters and can take something off the pitch. Punjab Kings batsman KL Rahul, who was the Orange Cap winner last year, has gone through a bad phase at the international level in recent times but despite this he and Mayank Agarwal can again become the backbone of the Punjab franchise batting. It will also be interesting to see how Punjab balances the foreign quota of its four players. Whether he will give a chance to West Indies batsman Nicholas Pooran or whether he will give a chance to top order batsman David Malan in T20 International, remains to be seen.

The teams are as follows:
