The Cricket Board of India (BCCI) may recommend the name of India’s fast bowler Jaspreet Bumrah for this year’s prestigious Arjuna Award. Bumrah lost to Ravindra Jadeja in the Arjuna Award race last year on the basis of seniority. The name of opener Shikhar Dhawan in the race for this award is also discussed as he missed it in 2018 even though the board sent his nomination.
A BCCI source told PTI, “Last year we sent names of Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami in the men’s category. “Bumrah had completed only two years in international cricket at the time when according to the selection criteria, the player had performed at the top level for at least three years, so he could not achieve it.” “So not Bumrah (who completed three years in international cricket last year) but Jadeja who is senior to him and has been performing continuously for many years,” the source said.
Jasprit Bumrah has taken 68 wickets in 14 Tests, 104 wickets in 64 ODIs and 59 wickets in 50 T20 Internationals. “He is definitely a great candidate,” the source said. He was the number one ranked bowler of the ICC. He is the only Asian bowler to have taken five wickets in South Africa, England, Australia and West Indies. “
It is believed that the BCCI will hardly send the name of Mohammed Shami for the Arjuna Award as he is facing a case of alleged domestic violence. In such a situation, Shami is not eligible for this award. On the other hand Dhawan is the senior player of the team and his teammates Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja have already received the award. However, Dhawan’s career has been heavily affected in the last few years due to injuries. But a former BCCI official says that Dhawan’s seniority cannot be ignored.
He said, “In 2018 we sent Dhawan’s name but only Smriti (Mandhana) got the award. Therefore, BCCI can send the names of both Bumrah and Dhawan. BCCI is considering recommending the names of Indian women cricketer all rounder Deepti Sharma and fast bowler Shikha Pandey in the women’s section.
