PSG broke several barriers by winning on the field of Bayern Munich (2-3), Wednesday in the quarter-final first leg of the Champions League. He also confirmed his great success against the Bavarians.
There are the figures of the match: this 3-2 victory in the middle of a field of opposing shots (31 including 12 on target for Bayern, 6 including four on target for PSG). Then there are the historical statistics which underline the exceptional degree of Parisian success in Bavaria. Before Wednesday, Bayern had not lost in the Champions League since March 2019. The Bavarians had since, chained, 18 wins and a draw under four different managers: Carlo Ancelotti, Jupp Heynckes, Niko Kovac and Hansi Flick.
Paris also became the 2nd French team to score in the knockout phase of C1 against Bayern Munich after St Etienne in the first round return of the 1969/70 edition (3-0 at Geoffroy-Guichard). PSG had already scored in Bavaria, like George Weah in 1994-1995, but it was in the group stage. The victory of Mauricio Pochettino’s men also confirms the status of (almost) Parisian bête noire against Bayern. Certainly, the Bavarians won the last final between the two teams (1-0) but they have historically struggled to face this opponent.
