Audi Q4 e-tron, the compact SUV that wants to sweep the Tesla Model Y

Audi offers its e-tron in every way. As soon as the e-tron GT comes out of the garage, the Q4 follows suit. Of course, the compact SUV does not target the same audience, nor the same wallets, but it could embody in the short term, the biggest electric success of the brand with the rings. Indeed, the Q4 e-tron will act as an entry ticket to Audi’s electric catalog, this in the most promising segment of the moment, namely that of compact SUVs.

To put the odds on its side, it is not one, but two versions of the Q4 e-tron that Audi has presented. There is the classic version of the compact SUV and the Sportback pendant with its plunging roofline, more sporty. Apart from this slight stylistic difference and a slightly smaller chest on the second, the technical sheet is identical in all respects.

Only the design changes

This is particularly the case inside this Q4 e-tron in which Audi has chosen to make some adjustments. The virtual cockpit, the name the manufacturer gives to its digital instrumentation, spans 10.25 inches. It is supported by a new central screen (10 or 11.6 inches depending on the level of finish, slightly oriented towards the driver. Finally the set is completed by a head-up display which includes an augmented reality navigation feature, the same than on the Volkswagen ID. 4.

Whether the buyer opts for the classic Q4 or the Sportback, he will have to choose between three levels of configuration that will have a definite impact on performance and range.

  • The Q4 35 e-tron : it combines a 125 kW motor on the rear axle and a 52 kWh battery. This is the cheapest version of the SUV at 42,800 euros.
  • The Q4 40 e-tron : the intermediate version also has a single engine at the rear, but it is more powerful (150 kW). With its 77 kWh battery, it is the model with the best range, i.e. 520 km.
  • The Q4 e-tron quatrro : the performance version of the compact SUV switches to all-wheel drive and a twin-engine unit developing 220 kW of power.

As with its cousin at VW, the ID.4, the obvious opponent is the Tesla Model Y. And as with Volkswagen, the price may be part of Audi’s argument. Indeed, in its most affordable version, the Q4 e-tron can even benefit from the ecological bonus of 7,000 euros and thus widen the gap with the 63,000 euros minimum requested by Tesla for its SUV. The Audi Q4 e-tron will be available from June. The Sportback version, 2000 euros more expensive, will arrive in September.
