Spotify is in the process of deploying a voice control system within its iOS and Android apps. With this feature enabled, you can start playing your favorite tracks without hands, using just your voice, using the magic formula “Hey Spotify”. You can then ask it to start playing a track, play a playlist, open a radio station, and of course control playback in general. It also seems possible to ask this music-loving vocal assistant to start playing the songs you like so that it randomly plays a song in your Daily Mixes.

However, unlike native smartphone voice assistants which can be launched at any time (and already know how to control Spotify perfectly), the system proposed here is less practical. It requires that the application be open to function.
So why offer such a function? Perhaps because the platform could soon launch a connected device to replace your car’s car radio, as has already been mentioned in the past.
For now, it seems that a limited number of users can access this new function. If you are one of the lucky ones, the app should display an alert asking you to give the app permission to access your smartphone’s microphone. The option can also be activated manually by going to the Spotify settings in the menu dedicated to the permissions of the microphone.
