Acquisition of ARM by Nvidia: the British government launches an investigation

The ax has fallen: the British government has decided to launch an investigation into the takeover of its flagship of ARM semiconductors by the American Nvidia. Validated on the business side for the sum of 40 billion dollars last September, the deal will therefore be the subject of an investigation by the UK competition authority (Competition and Markets Authority or CMA).

British Digital Minister Oliver Dowden announced it in a press release: “ After careful consideration of Arm’s buyout proposal, today I issued an advisory to intervene on national security issues “. An approach which mandates the CMA to assess the implications of this takeover.

The report, which will be submitted by the end of July, will or will not authorize the sale of ARM to Nvidia. In the event that ARM is sold to the Americans, Europe would find itself partly dispossessed of one of its rare gems, ARM being an essential architecture in everyday objects.

Given the mobilization of civil society – including one of the co-founders of ARM – as well as the challenges of controlling architecture for important third parties – Qualcomm, Apple, etc. – it seemed obvious that the sale would not be easy. And the cooling of transatlantic relations under the Trump era and the current shortage of semiconductors have highlighted the weakness of European players in the field.
