The women’s softball match between Japan and Australia (8-1) was the first to cross the starting line of this special edition and always under the threat of a potential cancellation. Two other matches are scheduled for the day (Italy-United States: 0-2 and Mexico-Canada). The women’s football tournament also begins this Wednesday with six games on the program.
Other athletes will be affected on Thursday, notably with the French men’s team’s match against Mexico (10 a.m. French time). In total, four disciplines will start before the start of the official ceremony, at 1 p.m. (French time Friday). This will also concern rowing with the qualifiers for several specialties (single scull, two sculls, four sculls) but also archery (men’s and women’s classification rounds).
The competitors in the shooting events (10m air rifle, and 10m air pistol) will measure themselves, on preliminary training while the first inspection of the horses in the dressage test is scheduled for Friday morning.
A question of timing and time to rest
But why do these competitions start early? It is just a matter of timing. Faced with the impossibility of scheduling a football or softball tournament in two weeks with the necessary rest periods, the organizers anticipate the entries in the running to allow the final to play on time. As is traditionally the case.
The rowing events will start early due to rest constraints between the qualifying phases but also because of the many disciplines scheduled. They will then have to give way to those of canoe in line which will be contested in the second week on the same body of water of the Canal de la Forêt de la Mer. No medals will be awarded before the opening ceremony but athletes will be eliminated. before the Games begin.
