Great favorite of the Olympic football tournament, Spain conceded a draw for its first match of the 2021 Olympics against Egypt, this Friday in Sapporo (0-0), despite a clear domination. Oscar Mingueza and Dani Ceballos came out on injury.
It’s a start to the tournament to forget for Spain. Engaged against Egypt this Thursday in the Sapporo Dome for their very first match of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, La Roja conceded a draw despite significant domination. Like its big sister during Euro 2021, the Spanish Olympic team had the ball (62% possession) and obtained the most chances (10 shots to 3).
But nothing worked. The Egyptian defense did not give in and Spain left this match with a small point and some doubts with the injuries of Oscar Mingueza and Dani Ceballos. The first came out after twenty minutes of play while the second gave way at half-time, hit an ankle, without knowing if the two will be able to continue these Games.

A rebound expected from Sunday against Australia
For the Spanish team, this draw is a disappointment, as La Roja is a favorite in the competition. A regulation obliges La Liga clubs to cede at least one player to the Olympic selection, which allows Spain to field an eleven much more competitive than that of France or other teams.
Among the holders this Thursday, we found Unai Simon, Pau Torres, Pedri, Dani Olmo and Mikel Oyarzabal, who reached the semi-finals of Euro 2021 with Spain in early July. Despite this draw, La Roja’s chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals are not in question. Spain will however have to react on Sunday in their second match against Australia, before facing Argentina next Wednesday.
